Utlimate Display of Sportmanship
The United States Open Women's Tournament concluded yesterday with Justine Henin of Belgium def. Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, 6-1, 6-3, winning her second U.S. Open title.
Though not surprising, I'm still glad Justine pulled through the top heavy draw. From Dinara Safina, Serena Williams, to Venus Williams, Justine definitely had played her best tennis these past two weeks, winning the tournament without dropping a single set!
However, the biggest surprise for me was watching Jelena Jankovic played against Venus. I have never seen Jelena played before last Wednesday, let alone pronouncing her name correctly, but she was so much fun to watch. Very composed, relaxed, interacting with fans on court while she's losing, are qualities that can't be taught (Venus def. Jelena 6-4, 1-6, 6-7). Though most fans are rooting for Venus, Jelena definitely won the fans over in the end. In her post game interview, she was still very relaxed, smiling, joking with the reporters...hardly seemed like she lost the match. Her display of sportsmanship is definitely admirable for players in any sport. I shall be rooting for the 'smiling serb' to become the No. 1 player someday (hopefully someday after Justine's retired...haha :P)
Contrary to Jelena's composure, Serena's behavior at post game conference is simply despicable...it is no wonder she has little fans outside the U.S. Justine definitely made her play for each point, yet she said Justine made a lot of lucky shots....well if that really was the case, I'm glad Serena's not so lucky that day then.
From the U.S. Open website interview clips:
Jelena's Interview: 13:07 min long (even longer than Venus' interview, who's the winner of the match)
Serena's Interview: 2:58 min long
All in all tennis was excellent, and life is good.
