Winter Externship Experience at Taishin Financial Holdings
Start 1-02-2006
Day One: Highlights of the day include when Wendy showed me the products of the bank. Also, in the afternoon (evening) there was a SoEasy product selliing seminar, which was very interesting.
Day Two: When Rose referred me to the operations section of the commercial bank, in the morning, the head of the operation led me around, and two of her co-workers showed me the process of basic operations of CD accounts and foreign dollar exchanges. THe rest of the day I was just sitting around and not doing much.
Day Three: In the morning Jenny had a client, where I was able to sit in at the meeting and observe. Insurance serves security in mortgage and after-death tax purposes. Also, today there was an investing and new tax policy seminar after work for the FA's and it's where I first met Simon and 恩如.
Day Four: I had a morning chat with Megan to learn about Mutual Funds and the forms needed to actually buy one. Product Management Meeting - Location: B1 Room 101
IP-investing product
FC-Financial consultants
PM-Product management
Schedule: issue 1: How to make sure that every wealth manager gets the product education?
issue 2: 業務報告
基金 | 連動債+結構型存款 | 保險 | 信託
Product presentation by Citigroup
Product presentation by IXIS investment bank
Day Five: In the morning to the afternoon I talked to a PB on the first floor. SLightly borning, since he didn't have any clients and I didn't have that many questions, though he did talk a little bit about bonds (連動債).
After lunch I was at the operations(first floor servicing) and observed the processes of many different transactions. Not that boring though I wouldn't want to be doing that job. I mentor 陳宥樺 is very nice; something that is very different that Day Two is that I was able to see the after-service operations, which is really cool, because I got to see stashes and stashes of money [cash]. THe whole lesson of the job seems to be you have to be really careful, so far it's not half bad of an experience.
Day Six: I went to 台新中山分行
I went there by MRT, which is quite an experience for me. The people there are really really nice, I met with the head manager and the head of FSA. The day was divided into two parts, morning to lunch and after-lunch to evening. The first session I learned tons of information on loans and it was really cool. I also went to lunch with Vincent and 佩妤, the lunch was delicious (an intersting note on lunches...all of them were yummy!) For additional info just check the handouts I got.
Afternoon with Allen at the Wealth Management Division. It was very informing and the whole seesion just blew my mind away. I learned the Ibbotson software and the theory behind it...it was really really cool. Also, I got to see the information given to new employees and I got to see how some of the merger and acquisition projects that Allen was involved with. See notes of more info.
Day Seven: This is the first day that I saw the trading floor located on the 11th floor. It was such an amazing site! Glass windows everywhere, IBM workstation for every working locations. mm....this stuff is really hard to write about, I guess just check notes in my portfolio.
Day Eight: Today was pretty much a learning session. The morning I learned from 恩如 about trust planning, and I learned about investments from Simon. I learned so much from both of them, they were true pros. I got lecture notes from 恩如 and a CD-Rom from Simon. I already transferred all the files on the CD into my computer, and the bookmarked his website. My goal would be to go through all this information and hopefully one day I will be able to develop my own system and sets of tools. Very useful day...I learned soo much.
Day Nine: Trading floor...Options and foreign exchange. Art gallery tour!
Day Ten: Trading floor... DMT and Product management. Nice last lunch with Megan and Wendy.
The reason that I didn't write all that much on the last two days is that I didn't really understand a lot of what the traders were doing. I think mostly it's due to the fact that I haven't learned it in school. However, I still learned a lot and since I'm taking Financial Economics this semester I was able to relate to what they were telling me.
Overall this experience is wonderful, not only to enhance my resume and to extend my knowledge of the financial industry, and I sincerely hope that I can get that internship over the summer.
